FAQ
The Internet of Things connects physical devices with digital processes, opening up new opportunities for efficiency, transparency and automation. These FAQs explain the potential benefits, prerequisites for use and typical challenges when planning and implementing IoT initiatives.
What is the Internet of Things (IoT)?
The Internet of Things (IoT) refers to physical devices that are connected to one another, capturing and exchanging data and making it available for digital use. The result is connected systems that can automate, monitor or improve processes in a targeted way.
What benefits does the Internet of Things offer companies?
The Internet of Things helps companies make processes more transparent and efficient, monitor devices more effectively and build new digital services. The data gathered can be used to optimise workflows, reduce errors and support better-informed decisions.
When is it worth using IoT solutions?
Using IoT solutions pays off when devices, equipment or processes need to be connected to make better use of data or run workflows more efficiently. IoT is particularly relevant for topics such as monitoring, automation, fleet management, smart buildings and industrial applications.
What risks arise from poorly planned IoT projects?
Poorly planned IoT projects can lead to security gaps, integration problems, unnecessary costs or systems that are difficult to scale. Without clear requirements, the right architecture or a realistic feasibility assessment, the risk of inefficient processes and technical dependencies increases.

Glossary
Connected devices, data flows and business processes form the foundation of modern IoT applications. This glossary sets out key technical and organisational concepts relevant to evaluating, introducing and operating connected solutions.
Industrial IoT (IIoT)
Industrial IoT (IIoT) refers to IoT applications in industrial settings, such as machinery, plant equipment, production and maintenance. The term distinguishes industrial use cases from more general connected products and consumer scenarios.
Commissioning process
The commissioning process covers the steps involved in setting up, configuring and preparing devices, plant equipment or systems for operation for the first time. It is important in IoT solutions because it must be efficient, secure and reliable – even in challenging conditions, such as on a construction site.
Business applications
Business applications are software solutions that support or represent specific business processes. In an IoT context, they use data from connected devices to control workflows, monitor them or support business decisions.
IoT ecosystem
An IoT ecosystem describes the interplay between connected devices, platforms, data flows, applications and operating processes. In a consulting context, the term matters because technical decisions are rarely made in isolation – they affect the entire connected environment.
Make or buy
Make or buy describes the decision on whether a solution is developed in-house or sourced as an existing product. In an IoT context, this often concerns platforms, device components, software modules or complete solution building blocks.
