University of Bern: Research with practical relevance

The University of Bern is one of Switzerland's leading universities. It combines excellent basic research with social relevance. As part of its 2030 digitalisation strategy, it specifically promotes projects for digital transformation, including in the field of law. The “Law and Digitalisation” research group deals with practical issues at the interface between law and technology.
“LexCraft” was developed in collaboration with Ergon for a project supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) to promote scientific research in the field of digital decision support. The aim was to use digital methods to make complex legal decision-making processes accessible and understandable. The result is an intuitive research prototype that uses decision trees to enable even non-experts to navigate safely through specialist areas of law.
In close collaboration with Ergon, a functional tool was developed within a very short time and is now being evaluated under real-world conditions. The combination of scientific curiosity and technical implementation expertise formed the basis for the joint success. LexCraft is an exemplary example of successful cooperation between research and technology partners and a concrete contribution to the digital future of law.
Projects
In a project supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF), the University of Bern worked with Ergon to develop a digital tool that maps legal decision-making processes in clear decision trees. This enables lawyers to find their way around more quickly, even without specialist knowledge.
Success
LexCraft makes legal decision-making processes simpler and easier to understand. The digital solution lowers barriers to entry and supports practical research into the digitisation of law.
