University Children's Hospital Zurich: AI for more efficient literature searches

The University Children's Hospital Zurich (Kispi) is one of Europe's leading centres for paediatric medicine. In paediatric oncology, specialist teams research individually tailored therapies for children and young people with cancer – an approach that depends on careful review of the medical literature. This research has to be repeated for every individual patient case, which makes it time-consuming.

Together with Ergon, and with support from Google Cloud, the Kispi team developed a research prototype that automatically applies and compares different AI-based search strategies. The application searches relevant specialist databases, refines search queries iteratively, and uses a systematic evaluation method to make the results objectively comparable. This allows the research team, for the first time, to reliably assess which AI methods are best suited to supporting literature research. The insights gained lay the groundwork for further research into AI-based approaches in paediatric oncology.
