The productivity and efficiency of distributed teams and mobile workforces relies strongly on how well the IT systems support collaboration over the Internet. Microsoft Exchange Server, the Microsoft SharePoint family and the ActiveSync protocol are established internationally as cornerstones of Groupware and collaborative working environments, with ActiveSync in particular increasingly gaining status as a standard throughout the Microsoft world. The most common application scenario is the mobile synchronisation of calendars, contacts and to-do lists between Microsoft Exchange Server and mobile clients (e.g. smartphones).

As Exchange and SharePoint store such large volumes of critical data, these resources simply cannot be made available over the Internet without providing additional protection. The risk associated with allowing a direct connection from the Internet to the server is simply too high. The same applies to other applications and has led to companies resorting to across-the-board bans on Internet connections to internal servers holding sensitive data.
